The coroner, fire officials and police with cadaver dogs will search the still smoldering area, beginning with homes that still have cars in the driveway, officials said.

"We believe most of the people from this mobile home park were evacuated," said Los Angeles County Coroner Ed Winter. "It is a precautionary measure to do a methodical search space by space to see and if any remains are identified or located."

In other parts of southern California, firefighters were hoping that strong winds would die down Sunday, helping them to quell raging wildfires that have roared through the area scorching homes, businesses and thousands of acres.

Firefighters were struggling to contain the blazes, said Lynette Round, a spokeswoman for Orange County Fire Authority.

"If the winds die down it will give the firefighters an upper hand on fighting this," Round told CNN on Sunday morning. "It is a wind-driven fire and with those gusty winds up to 25 miles an hour, it’s giving the firefighters a really difficult time. It’s hopscotched throughout the county."

Round said 168 homes were destroyed or damaged in the Orange County area. The so-called Triangle Freeway Complex Fire had also damaged a building at a high school, Round said.

The blaze, which has burnt 10,475 acres, is not contained at all, and is spreading throughout Orange County, posing threats to Yorba Linda, Corona, Brea, Chino Hills and Anaheim Hills neighborhoods, according to California fire officials.

The largest of the fires — the Sayre Fire — erupted late Friday in the steep terrain of the Angeles National Forest on the outskirts of the Sylmar neighborhood, about 20 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

The fire burned around 20,000 acres in the San Fernando Valley and forced more than 10,000 people to flee their homes, authorities said. The fire was about 30 percent contained, California fire officials said.

Look, I’m no fan of Sarah Palin. I think she’s a small-minded, proudly provincial, ignorant example of the worst impulses of us as a people. I think she was an insult to the American electorate. And I think she embodies Joyce’s “peasant cunning.”

But.

None of this, not a whit, has to do with her gender, except insofar as the McCainiacs thought they could pick off a couple of PUMAs here and there, plus she gave Bill Kristol a woody, which he mistook for political genius.

Maureen Dowd argues this morning that Palin’s utter failure of a candidacy is proof positive that women have now reached the level where they suceed and fail as men do: on their merits.

When Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton ran, their fates were inextricably linked with their gender. If they failed, many women felt, there was an X through the whole X chromosome. A blot on the female copybook.

If not this woman now, Hillary’s supporters would ardently ask me, what woman ever?

But Sarah Palin can come across as utterly unready to lead the world ? or even find the world on a map ? and that doesn’t reflect poorly on the rest of us.

It only means that she doesn’t have enough mind grapes or thoughtsicles, as Tracy Morgan refers to brain droppings on “30 Rock,” to be president soon.

I’m sorry, but I cannot disagree more. While Palin failed on her lack of merits, there is no question that the braying asses of soi-disant liberalism, in their zestful attempts to unnecessarily discredit her, are leaping all over the same medieval models they found so useful this spring when dealing with Senator Clinton.

Here, for example, in a feature called “The Gift of Gab,” where barely 30 seconds in, Keith Olbermann calls Palin, more or less, the Wife of Bath. Olbermann’s a smart guy, and I have no issues with his fact-checking of the dates of Harry Potter publication (I did that myself) or the length of her acquaintanceship with McCain. But as a smart guy, he really should be aware of the medieval trope of the woman who will not shut up. Even as you give her more coverage than the VP who, you know, won.

If the wingnut gasbags Don’t Matter Anymore, as Olbermann so forcefully noted last week, then why is fully 40% of your show given over to a woman who matters even less? Not shutting up was point 3, the clothes were point 1. Both are standard misogynist tropes, both played here for laughs.

Here’s a hint: you guys think she’s hot, plus she gives you a chance to smirk and sneer at women generally for their silly, profligate, Chatty-Cathy ways. (Did John McCain’s family dress from campaign funds? Obama’s? What kind of underwear does Jill Biden wear? When these are comic features on a nightly newscast, then we’ll talk.)

The same vibe was apparent in last week’s episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, where the delighted giggles of Maher and Paul Begala were rightly called out by guests Joe Queenan and Farai Chideya, who noted both the gender and class sneering toward Palin, as well as her scapegoating. Let her own people call her a hillbilly: we don’t need to. If we’re really smarter–and I believe we are–there’s no need to go down this road.

Starting at about 1:30 here, Queenan points out that, as a local political figure, there’s lots of things that can’t be laid at her feet. Note his face and that of Chideya, both of whom are not buying into the frat boy chuckles over her ignorance.

Later in the episode (peculiarly, not on video, but available for podcast download on iTunes), Chideya says:

Whatever you think of Sarah Palin, there’s something sleazy about people who, only now, are basically, you know trying to cover their own rusty dusties. It’s pathetic. (26:39)

When the Palin pick was first announced, I, like a lot of people, thought it was about gender. I spent a week or so thinking it was to assuage the religious right, but gradually came to the conclusion that she was there so losing wouldn’t be McCain’s fault. And that’s what I’m seeing now.

She’s not ready. We get that; we got it as a nation. Without the adolescent sneers of guys who think they’re funny.

Try to win with some grace, boys. You’ve beaten back the scary vaginas, whether they were qualified or not, and your penises are safe. For now.

New York City was overrun this week by big, hairy, armed and dangerous monsters. Then, the cast of Planet of the Apes showed up to make it worse.

The Charlton Heston/Roddy McDowall sci-fi classic arrived on Blu-ray this week, and to commemorate the event, 20th Century Fox brought dead ringers of Cornelius, Zira, Dr. Zaius and their kin to Manhattan.

In addition to the release of the first classic Apes flick, its sequels are also available in a new Blu-ray volume. The Planet of the Apes 40 Year Evolution Blu-ray Collection includes all five Apes films in HD, including Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape From the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, Battle for the Planet of the Apes and the 1968 original.

When the Midtown-bound apes were asked about a rumored attempt to blow up the Statue of Liberty because its wreckage would make a cool ending to a film, they just started flinging it.

a las, killzone 2 fans, the beta has arrived. to no more than a select few playstation 3 users, though. nobody the less, a lot of people have been accepted into the killzone 2 beta already. by reason of those of you living under a lull, killzone 2 on the ps3 (or right-minded killzone 2) is a shooting game that has been hyped up for the playstation 3. with any luck it bequeath live up to the hype. judging from what we’ve been shown, it looks correspondent to it’s graphics were close to what it was shooting for. if things go well the gameplay mechanics can stay above par. the cover system is what i’m mainly looking forward to, killzone 2 is fair much the only fps game i’ve seen with a disguise plan. the artstyle of killzone 2 also seems interesting, it might be one of the other many goty contenders this year. mirrors edge (arguably), resistance 2, gears of war 2, fallout 3, and now killzone 2.

It is a sad misconception in many new-generation Indians, including some new andhra kids, that Telugu is not so widespread among the indian languages of early 19th & 20th centuries! They even think some of the other Dravidian languages were more popular and hence they deserve a better treatment than Telugu. This seems to be of mere ignorance as historical evidences prove it otherwise. There were times in past centuries where Telugu was more predominant, officially used, widely spoken & recognized language than any other regional language.

After independence India declared 13 languages as official languages, and Telugu is being treated as one of the 13 popular languages. It started printing the name 1 rupee notes (and all higher denominations) in all 13 language. Because of space constraint, the coins contained only english & hindi which is the national language. But during the british regime, they felt equal priority to telugu along side of english & hindi.

I know this post slightly deviates from showing the historical legendary of the language, but I thought showing the wide adoption of it is also equally important.

A Commission statement warned: “In 2009, the EU economy is expected to grind to a standstill.”

The slowdown will mark the eurozone’s first recession since the currency’s inception in 1999.

Figures also announced on Monday show that manufacturing in the zone fell in October to its lowest level since 1997.

The Commission also forecast further falls of 0.1% in the third and fourth quarters of this year, and overall growth of just 0.1% next year and 0.9% in 2010.

Output, new orders, new export orders, and purchases - all fell to their lowest level since the Purchasing Managers’ Index, compiled by Markit Economics, was introduced more than 11 years ago.

European companies also cut jobs at the fastest rate since January 2002.

October is the fifth consecutive month in which the index has recorded a contraction in eurozone manufacturing.

All countries within the region saw new orders and manufacturing output fall, with Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Austria and Ireland experiencing record falls.

The headline index registered a score of 41.1, a record low. Any score below 50 represents a contraction in the manufacturing sector.

The employment index fell to 44.4, down from 47 in September.

Cancelled orders

New orders fell as both consumers and businesses cut back on spending due to the financial crisis and fears of a painful recession, leading some to cancel or postpone orders.

The downturn was felt across all sectors recorded in the index - consumer, intermediate and investment goods.

Stocks of finished goods awaiting sale also reached a record high in the survey.

The outlook for manufacturing remains bleak, said Chris Williamson, chief economist at Markit Economics.

“With stocks of unsold goods rising at a record pace due to weak sales, further cuts to output and employment are likely in the coming download adventure movie horror movies months,” he said.

There was some good news for consumers. As a direct result of slowing demand and the fall in the price of commodities - mainly the price of oil - inflation in the sector fell to its lowest level in three years.

“The startling speed of the downturn has been matched by an accompanying rapid easing in inflationary pressures,” said Mr Williamson.
